Which Shopify plan should you actually be on?

The plan fee is the part everyone compares, and it is the part that matters least. What decides your bill is the card rate, and it changes with the plan. Put your revenue in and see the whole cost.

Disclosure:the links to Shopify on this page are affiliate links. If you open a store through one, Libautech earns a commission at no extra cost to you. It does not change the maths below, which uses Shopify's own published prices and will tell you to stay on the cheapest plan when that is the right answer.

Which plan should you be on?

The plan fee is the number everyone compares, and it is the one that matters least. The card rate falls with every plan, so a bigger plan often costs less overall.

About Plus

Not yet. On your settings, Plus only becomes the cheapest plan above $800,400 a month of revenue. Below that it is bought for what it does, not to save money: unlimited staff, a fully customisable checkout, 200 POS locations.

Plan fees and card rates read from shopify.com/pricing on July 13, 2026. Every rate shown is a “from” rate, Plus included, so a real blended rate can be higher on premium and international cards. Shopify prices differ by country. This covers the online card rate and the plan fee, not in-person rates, apps or currency conversion.

The part nobody tells you

The plan fee is the small number

The card rate decides it

Basic, Grow and Advanced each take a different percentage of every card payment. On a store doing real revenue, that percentage dwarfs the plan fee. This is why a bigger plan often costs less overall, and why the crossover happens at a specific revenue you can calculate.

A third-party gateway is expensive

Take payments anywhere other than Shopify Payments and Shopify adds a fee to every order: 2% on Basic, falling to 0.2% on Plus. That single setting moves the answer more than the plan choice does, which is why the calculator asks.

Plus is not a mystery

Shopify's comparison table says only "most competitive rates" for Plus, which is why most guides give up there. Its plan card publishes a real figure: card rates from 2.25% against Advanced's 2.5%. So Plus can be priced, and the calculator prices it. It overtakes Advanced above about $800,400 a month on Shopify Payments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Shopify plan is cheapest for me?
It depends on your revenue, not on the plan fee. The plan fee is the small part: the card rate is what decides it. A lower plan with a worse rate costs more once you are taking real money. Put your revenue into the calculator and it will tell you which of Basic, Grow and Advanced is actually cheapest at your volume.
I have no sales yet. What should I start on?
Shopify's own intro offer: three days free, then 1 a month for three months in your currency. With no sales, every plan costs you nothing but its fee, so the cheapest one wins by definition. Open the store, build it, and choose a real plan when you know what you are selling.
When is Shopify Plus worth it?
Later than most people tell you, and the calculator will show you exactly when. Shopify's comparison table only says 'most competitive rates' for Plus, but its plan card publishes a real number: card rates from 2.25% + 30 cents in USD, against 2.5% on Advanced. That spread is what pays for the higher plan fee. On Shopify Payments, Plus overtakes Advanced at around $800,000 a month of revenue. On a third-party gateway, where Plus also cuts the transaction fee from 0.6% to 0.2%, it overtakes at roughly $308,000. Below those points, Plus is bought for what it does, not to save money.
Why does the calculator ask about Shopify Payments?
Because it changes the answer more than the plan does. If you take payments through another gateway, Shopify charges an extra fee on every order: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. On Shopify Payments that fee is zero. A merchant on a third-party gateway reaches the next plan up far sooner.
Are these prices accurate for my country?
They are accurate for the four markets the calculator offers, read from Shopify's own pricing pages on July 13, 2026. Shopify prices differ by country, and so do its card rates, so check the page for your own market. We show the source link for whichever currency you pick.
Do you earn anything if I open a store?
Yes. The links to Shopify on this page are affiliate links, so Libautech earns a commission if you open a store through them. It costs you nothing extra. It also does not change what the calculator says: the maths uses Shopify's published prices, and it will happily tell you to stay on Basic.
